When security incidents involve human error, it's worth understanding why rather than simply blaming the individual:

Urgency and Time Pressure

People make different decisions when rushed. Attackers often create artificial urgency—"Your account will be closed in 24 hours!" or impersonating a boss who needs something immediately.

Trust and Authority

Humans are generally inclined to trust, especially requests that appear to come from authority figures or established institutions. This helpfulness becomes a vulnerability when exploited.

Cognitive Load

When people are focused on completing a task, security considerations may fade into the background. The more complex the work environment, the easier it is to miss warning signs.

Competing Priorities

Security behaviors often require extra effort—verifying requests, using stronger authentication, following longer procedures. When these compete with job demands, security sometimes loses.

Creating an Environment for Better Decisions

Rather than expecting perfect human behavior, organizations can consider how to make secure behavior easier:

  • Reducing the number of security decisions people need to make
  • Making secure options the default rather than the exception
  • Creating clear channels for reporting concerns without fear
  • Providing context for why security matters, not just what to do

This perspective shifts from "fixing" people to designing systems that account for human nature.

The Reporting Question

One of the most valuable security behaviors is reporting—letting someone know when something seems wrong. Yet many employees hesitate to report:

  • Fear of being blamed if they clicked something they shouldn't have
  • Uncertainty about what qualifies as worth reporting
  • Not knowing who to tell or how
  • Assuming someone else has already noticed

Organizations that make reporting easy and blame-free often catch problems earlier.

The Insider Dimension

Not all human-factor risks are about mistakes. Some involve intentional actions by insiders—whether malicious employees, contractors with access, or former staff whose credentials weren't properly revoked.

This dimension is uncomfortable to discuss but important to acknowledge. Most employees are trustworthy, but access controls and monitoring exist partly to address the exceptions.

A Realistic Perspective

Humans will make mistakes. They'll click on phishing links, choose weak passwords, and occasionally ignore security warnings. Expecting otherwise is unrealistic.

The question isn't whether human-factor incidents will occur, but how to reduce their likelihood and limit their impact. This involves technology, process, culture, and accepting that perfection isn't achievable.
