We're excited to announce the launch of CybersecurityCanada.ca — a free cybersecurity assessment tool built specifically for Canadian businesses, based on the framework developed by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS).

This has been a passion project for us. The CCCS framework is one of the most thoughtful and practical cybersecurity frameworks available, developed by the Canadian government specifically for organizations operating in Canada. But until now, there hasn't been an accessible, self-service way for businesses to evaluate themselves against it. That's what CybersecurityCanada.ca changes.

Why We Built This

At Cyber Unit, we've spent years working with small and medium-sized businesses across Canada. One pattern we see repeatedly is that business owners know cybersecurity matters, but they don't know where they stand or where to start. The technical jargon, the alphabet soup of frameworks, and the overwhelming volume of advice makes it hard for a non-technical business owner to take that critical first step.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security created a framework that addresses exactly this problem — it's comprehensive yet practical, covering the security areas that matter most for Canadian organizations. We took that framework and built an assessment tool that any business owner, manager, or decision-maker can complete without needing an IT background.

What Makes It Different

We already offer a free quick security assessment here on cyberunit.com. It covers 20 critical security areas and takes under five minutes. It's a great starting point for any business wanting a rapid check on their security posture.

CybersecurityCanada.ca goes deeper. Built on the CCCS framework, it provides a more comprehensive evaluation specifically aligned with Canadian cybersecurity standards and the threat landscape facing Canadian businesses. Here's what sets it apart:

  • CCCS framework alignment: Every question and recommendation maps to the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security's guidelines — the same framework used by government agencies and recommended for Canadian organizations of all sizes.
  • Designed for non-technical users: You don't need an IT department or security expertise to complete it. The questions use plain language and describe real-world scenarios that any business owner would recognize.
  • Detailed reporting: At the end, you receive a comprehensive report breaking down your results by category, with specific, actionable recommendations tailored to your weakest areas.
  • Download and print options: Your report is yours to keep. Download it as a PDF or print it to share with your team, your board, or your insurance provider.
  • Complete privacy: This is critically important to us. We do not access your results. We do not store your data. Everything is processed in your browser and stays there. When you close the page, your data disappears. There's no account creation, no login, and no tracking of individual responses.

Who It's For

CybersecurityCanada.ca is designed for any Canadian business. Whether you're a five-person startup, a 200-employee manufacturing company, a law firm, a healthcare provider, or a construction company — if your business uses technology (and every business does), this assessment will help you understand your cybersecurity posture.

It's particularly valuable for:

  • Business owners who want to understand their risk without hiring a consultant
  • Managers responsible for operations or compliance who need a baseline assessment
  • Organizations preparing for cyber insurance applications or renewals, where a structured self-assessment can inform your submission
  • Businesses in regulated industries that need to demonstrate cybersecurity due diligence under PIPEDA, PIPA, or provincial privacy legislation

Why the CCCS Framework

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security is Canada's authority on cybersecurity. Operating under the Communications Security Establishment (CSE), it provides guidance, services, and resources to help protect Canadian organizations. Their framework was developed with input from cybersecurity experts across government and industry, and it reflects the specific threat landscape and regulatory environment that Canadian businesses operate in.

We chose to build on this framework because it strikes the right balance between thoroughness and practicality. It's comprehensive enough to provide meaningful results, but structured in a way that a non-specialist can engage with.

This Is Not a Lead Magnet

We want to be transparent about this. CybersecurityCanada.ca is not a lead generation tool disguised as a free resource. It's a genuine, free tool we've invested significant time and effort into building because we believe Canadian businesses deserve accessible cybersecurity resources.

There's no email gate. No "enter your details to see your results." No sales pitch embedded in the recommendations. You take the assessment, you get your results, and you're done. If you want professional help acting on your results, we're here — but there's absolutely no pressure, and the tool is fully valuable on its own.

Getting Started

Taking the assessment is straightforward. Visit CybersecurityCanada.ca, answer the questions honestly based on how your business currently operates, and review your detailed report at the end. The whole process can be completed in a single sitting.

We'd encourage you to share it with other Canadian business owners in your network. The more businesses that understand their cybersecurity posture, the more resilient our entire business community becomes. Cybersecurity isn't a competitive advantage to hoard — it's a rising tide that lifts all boats.

What Comes Next

If your results reveal areas that need attention — and for most businesses, they will — you have several paths forward:

  1. Use the recommendations in your report to prioritize improvements you can make internally. Many of the suggestions are practical steps that don't require significant investment.
  2. Share the report with your IT team or provider to discuss which areas to address first. The structured format makes it easy to have an informed conversation.
  3. Take our quick assessment on cyberunit.com for an additional perspective across 20 specific security areas.
  4. Read our related guides for deeper context: our small business cybersecurity checklist for 2026 and cybersecurity budgeting guide are good companions to your assessment results.
  5. If you'd like professional help, book a free consultation with our team. We can review your results together and discuss what a tailored security plan would look like for your business.

We're proud to launch this resource for the Canadian business community. Cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility, and we hope CybersecurityCanada.ca makes it a little easier for Canadian businesses to take that first step.
