Risks of Having Internet of Things (IoTs)

What Is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to all devices and appliances that can be connected to the internet, to collect & share data effortlessly, and speak to one another. Anything that can be connected through your phone can be considered an Internet of Things (e.g. Google Nest, smart door lock, smart garage door, smart doorbell, etc).

You may not know this, but there are several Internet of Things (IoT) devices that are scattered throughout our homes and it is widespread now as technology keeps on advancing. However, one of the most important takeaways to remember is that as more devices become wireless and connected through your internet, the higher the risk of having your devices and your internet hacked.

Raising Awareness About IoT

Before you add a smart coffee machine into your cart and order it, you may want to know some of the possible threats that come with it:

  • Reputable brand - Is the IoT you want come from a brand that is well-known? Do you want your data and privacy be shared with this company? Have you done research on this brand and their previous breaches?

  • Risk - Is the IoT you want worth risking your data and privacy being shared publicly to the world?

Questionable IoTs

Although having your entire home transform into a smart home may sound like a good idea, there are a lot of questionable IoTs that may question you, "Do you really need it?" Take a smart toaster for an example, connecting your smart toaster to your internet, and although it may seem nice to be able to set a schedule to toast your bread, is it worth having your internet and privacy breached? As you make your way into the kitchen to make your lunch, you may toast your bread at that time and wait for a few minutes.

Not all appliances and "things" need to be connected through your internet. If it is not essential, it should stay that way.
